While preparing to start up a light manufacturing company and not wanting to dig in to my savings, my roommate persuaded me to rent his van and start performing moves around Boston – and Gentle Giant was born.In 1984, I decided to bring moving beyond a part time endeavor and try a big experiment. What would happen if I only hired great people with integrity who would hustle on every job? And better yet, what would happen if I charged accordingly and did not have commissioned salespeople? Well, the result was we made the Inc. 500 within the first 5 years, solely on strong word of mouth.As I noted in the company mission statement, “We treat our employees with respect and compassion, and expect that they will extend the same courtesy to our customers.” While the company has grown considerably since those early days, with over 20 offices across the country, our company’s leadership has remained committed to the values upon which we established Gentle Giant.My life as a rower has taught me to be competitive, disciplined, and persistent. Ryan Gaus is a girl-dad to three and you’ll often find him at the ice hockey rink, where he coaches the team that his two oldest daughters play on, and referees college and youth hockey games. Before joining LiveSwitch, Ryan led global sales for Comply365, a leading aviation software company whose technology is used by many of the world’s largest airlines. Prior to that, he spent 9 years at Sageworks, a Raleigh-based fintech company that was founded by current LiveSwitch chairman, Brian Hamilton. Sageworks was twice named to the Inc. 500, and was acquired by Accel-KKR.
Ryan is also a licensed North Carolina real estate agent and is the co-founder of a boutique real estate brokerage for investors, while also co-owning and managing a portfolio of nearly 40 properties across the state.

If you wrote out Eric Wirks’s life on paper, statistically, his success, and where he is at in life today should not be possible. He has overcome unimaginable odds, and some of the hardest trials, tribulations, and low spots life could throw at someone. From poverty, childhood trauma, drug addiction, homelessness, prison, and PTSD. Today he is a loving husband, father, and son. A respected pillar in his community, and the industries he owns companies in. He is an active contributor to his favorite charities. An annual donor of tens of thousands of dollars in college scholarships at his former high school and is very generous with his time. Especially when it comes to helping entrepreneurs. A moving industry owners networking Facebook group founded in 2017 when there was nothing like it in existence at the time, but there was a dire need for a platform for moving industry owners from across the country to come together, share best practices, and just help each other. Almost eight years later it turned into the largest, most respected, and valuable moving industry owners’ group with thousands of heavily vetted moving company owners online today. Some of the best friendships, business relationships, company success stories, and mastermind groups have been created because of this group.
